Directional terms

Superior: above
Inferior: below

Medial: closer to the mid line
Lateral: further away from the mid line

Anterior: to the front
Posterior: to the back

Superficial: nearer to the surface
Deep: further into the body

Proxymal: situated toward the point of origin or attachment, as of a limb or bone
Distal: situated away from the point of origin or attachment, as of a limb or bone


Superficial Landmarks

Frons: fore head
Otic: Ear
Oris: Mouth
Oculous: eye
Mentis: chin
Nasus: nose
Bucca: cheek
Occipital: back of head
Cervical: neck
Axilla: armpit
Thoracic: chest
Abdomen: stomach
Umbilical: Belly button
Costal: upper back
Lumbar: lower back
Gluteal Cleft: is the groove or crack between the buttocks
Brachium: upper arm
Antecubital: inner elbow
Cubital (olecranon): outer elbow
Antebrachium: lower arm
Carpal: wrist
Pollex: thumb
Femur: thigh
Patella: inner knee
Popliteal: outer knee
Crural (crus): front part of the lower leg
Sural (sura): back part of the lower leg
Clacaneus: heel
Tarsal: ankle
Hallux: big toe
Inguinal: groin
Gluteal Fold: a fold that marks the upper limit of the thigh from the lower limit of the buttock

In the Abdominopelvic region there are 9 regions

right hypochondriac
epigastric
left hypochondriac
right lumbar
umbilical
left lumbar
right inguinal
hypogastric
left inguinal

the body planes are:

Sagittal: Separation of left and right parts of the body
Midsagittal: Equal left and right halves
Parasagittal: not equal separations into left and right

Transverse: Superior-Inferior

Frontal: anterior-posterior


Homeostasis: the internal regulation of vital statistics

Negative feedback Mechanism: the product turns off the reaction that makes the product

positive feedback mechanism: product stimulates reaction to go faster
